  • 2009 JCRC's Maybe-we'll-fly-if-it's-nice-enough-outside-New-Year's-Day-Fly-In was held on Thursday, January 1st. About a dozen JCRC members gathered at the Miller Memorial Flying Field to enjoy a nice time together sharing Christmas stories of new R/C gifts received and to get in a flight or two despite the windy and cold conditions. There were some interesting flights due to the light contrast that Winter months bring that make it difficult to view a model if it gets on the shadow side of the field. Rick Poire described one of Tom Copeland's landings as a "5-Point Landing" - wingtip, nose, wingtip, tail & wingtip before it stopped! At least he was there and trying to fly though. It was a good time and certainly a far cry from last year's first day of the year, so 2009 is already looking promising! Here we go! Click here to view the photos.

  • JCRC's 2nd Annual Helicopter Fly-In was held on Saturday, September 20th. Jim Crago served as the 2008 Contest Director of this event and more importantly, his lovely wife, Melba, was in charge of the food! Ribs? Home-made bread & cookies? Wow! Both worked long hours and did a fantastic job. We had pilots from all over the state; Columbia, Springfield, St. Louis, Sedalia, Jefferson City and some from Arkansas & Illinois. There were some very nice door prizes given away and our gratitude to all who donated prizes to the event, especially John Arndt of the Mid-Mo Hobby Shop who always comes through for us at local events. As you can imagine, there was lots of flying; scale, 3-D, vertical, sideways and even full-scale flying as U.S. Army CW4 Kevin Nowack of the Missouri National Guard arrived in a OH-58A Kiowa Observation Helicopter that was impressive to everyone who stopped by to see it and the kids loved having their picture taken inside of it. We are deeply grateful to everyone in the Missouri National Guard, especially Maj. Aaron Stover and CW4 Nowack for arranging to bring this awesome helicopter to our event. There were 26 R/C Pilots and they brought nearly 70 helicopters. While there were some exciting moments when throttles got stuck on wide open, there were no crashes! Plus, excluding a brief, unexpected, late afternoon downpour of rain, the weather was perfect too! The photos of the event are now posted, click here to view the first of three pages of nearly 200 photos. Our gratitude goes out to everyone who helped make this event a success; volunteers, pilots, spectators, businesses... THANKS!

JCRC Feature Photo: 1:10th scale Saturn V Rocket - Apollo 11

Several of the Mid-Missouri modelers that attended the 2009 Toledo R/C Trade Show were amazed by the center-piece model rocket that was on display for all to see. This isn't your average model rocket and the pictures have a difficult time showing the true size of this incredible labor of love. A guy named Steve Eves has assembled a scale model of the Saturn V Apollo 11 rocket that is 36 feet long! Amazingly, that is still only 1:10th scale. You would have to line up 10 of these end-to-end to equal the size of the real Saturn V, which was launched 40 years ago. In honor of that anniversary Steve, along with the help and sponsorship of many others have assembled this most impressive rocket that will be launched on Saturday, April 25th, 2009 with live coverage available on the Internet. 2009 JCRC: R/C Flight Training

Interested in R/C flying? Did you recently purchase or are you thinking about purchasing an R/C airplane for yourself or as a gift and want help learning how to fly it? You've come to the right place, we can help! "Trainer Nights" won't begin in 2009 until the time change later in the Spring. Let us know if you are interested in taking lessons by contacting us at info@jcrc.com. Training sessions are dependent upon the weather, including moderate to high winds. Yes, experienced flyers can fly in the wind, but winds over 10 mph make it difficult for beginners to learn, so there are times when it may be a beautiful, yet windy day, when lessons aren't given. Again you may contact JCRC at info@jcrc.com for further information.

We'd like for everyone to experience the thrill of flying an R/C airplane first-hand. We offer your first three Flying Lessons for free, even before you join the Club! R/C Flying Lessons are always free to members and even after you learn to fly, your friends in the Club will almost always have something to say about the way you fly!

If you're interested in purchasing an R/C airplane, either new or used, please feel free to talk to us first or even after you've shopped around. We can help you finalize your decision by offering suggestions on what to buy to help insure that you have the most successful experience possible, as well as what to avoid purchasing. By helping you to choose the right equipment the first time around, we may be able to save you a lot of frustration and money.

We have posted a form that most of our instructors use as they teach students about R/C airplanes and flying. Look it over to get a better idea of what it takes to successfully fly an R/C airplane, it's not as easy as it may appear.

Stop by and visit us anytime you find us out flying at the field, especially on the weekends when the weather is nice.

2009 JCRC: Flying Field Flight Zone Restrictions

We know, without a doubt, that all active JCRC Members do all they can to avoid flying over the new houses that border the JCRC Joseph Miller Memorial Park boundaries, yet one homeowner still claims that someone is trespassing over his property with an R/C airplane (yes, flying over their houses without permission is considered trespassing in Missouri, the same as if a neighborhood kid ran through your own back yard without your permission.) We don't know who is doing it (yet), but someone is driving around the gate and flying without permission. They are risking the flying privileges of all of us who try avoid breaking the rules. Whoever is flying past the park boundary must stop doing it immediately! Please review the recently updated Flying Zone Areas at the JCRC Flying Field, in them you can clearly see where we can and cannot fly. Again, we ask that all pilots who fly at the JCRC Flying Field review these photos and help us keep an eye out for anyone breaking this rule. As with all photos on our website, click on the  thumbnails to view larger versions.

Locked out? Yes, some of the information on our website doesn't need to be seen by everyone in the world, so it is located in a special secure area. We will gladly provide the User ID & Password to any current JCRC member who has forgotten or requests it.

JCRC Feature Articles:

  • Safety at the Flight Site - Click here to read important information to keep in mind as the Flying Season comes into full swing and see some of the things you should take with you each time you go out to the Miller Memorial Flying Site.

  • Enough Is Enough - Click here to read an editorial by Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association President, Phil Boyer, as he struck a nerve in October 2006 with his online editorial, "Enough is enough." Even though this applies to full-scale, general aviation, we thought it would be of interest to R/C Pilots as well. Boyer took on Chicago Mayor, Richard Daley, as well as other politicians and self-appointed safety "experts" for using the private airplane accident in New York City to call for more restrictions on general aviation.

  • One Second in a Reno P-51 - Click here to read an interesting article provided by the EAA Warbirds Newsgroup about what happens in a single second inside a P-51 flying in an unlimited air race.
  • Choosing the right Color Scheme - Click here to read an article about Color Theory for Model Airplanes that could help you maintain better flight orientation or learn to fly your R/C airplane sooner. With the building season upon us you may want to factor in these suggestions when deciding how you will cover your new creation.

  • PPM vs. PCM - Click here to read an article about a topic that is debated over-and-over again; Which is better? A PPM or PCM radio / receiver combination?

  • For Flight Instructors - Click here to read an article written for R/C Pilots who are at a point where they can start to help others learn to fly R/C airplanes.
