The photo on the left shows the Balsa USA Stick 40+ with the flag inserted above the wing which shows where a small hole was drilled through the wing to allow a small rod to be inserted from the top to turn the camera on and off between flights. For show, when the camera isn't installed Zimmerman flies around with the small American Flag flying above the plane.
The middle-left photo shows the open area inside the Balsa Stick 40+ where Shaun Zimmerman's Canon PowerShot S300 Digital Elph camera and housing are inserted into the fuselage very close to the Center-of-Gravity of the plane so that the added weight doesn't drastically change how the airplane flies. In fact, Zimmerman reports that the plane actually flies better with the added 10 ounces of weight when the camera is installed.
The middle-right photo shows the balsa & plywood housing that Shaun Zimmerman created to hold his Canon PowerShot S300 Digital Elph camera as it is inserted into the fuselage. This also shows how the lens protrudes from the side of the fuselage when the camera is turned on. The camera & housing are located directly over the Center-of-Gravity of the airplane so that the additional weight of the camera doesn't drastically change the flight characteristics of the plane. This also allows the plane to be flown without the camera installed.
The photo on the right is another view of how Shaun Zimmerman's Canon PowerShot S300 Digital Elph camera protrudes out the side of the fuselage when the camera is turned on. The small hole above the lens is so the camera's light meter can make accurate exposures.
