Aerial Digital Video

 Stick 40+ 1st Take-off

This is the very first aerial digital video clip that Shaun Zimmerman captured as his Balsa USA Stick 40+ took off from the JCRC runway.
Zimmerman says he vividly remembers the thrill of seeing the results of his very first aerial video clip shot from the Stick 40+. It seemed so realistic that it brought back memories of when he used to fly in full-scale sailplanes. Many people are surprised when they see how the videos and pictures turn out.

It's a lot of fun to turn the plane around and take a picture of yourself on the ground as well as recording the landmarks surrounding the flying field. It's also interesting to see the difference between the low-level and higher-level altitude photos of the area. One of the most challenging photos to capture is that of another R/C airplane or bird in the air next to the camera chase plane.

John Dussold captured this image of Charlie Little's (purple) Goldberg Eagle flying next to his Goldberg Eagle chase plane and at the same time ended up making a record of history as he also photographed the old runway. Both Dussold and Zimmerman intentionally left the wing of their R/C airplanes visible in the photos as proof of where the photos came from.

Dussold was able to document the progress of the construction of the new runway, pavilion and road as he continued to take photos from his Eagle. Zimmerman took three of the photos that Dussold took and combined them into this composite view of the new runway. You can see the huge difference in the runway because the two 'taxi-ways' are located in the same position. Another photo taken by Dussold after the center line stripes had been painted.

Zimmerman was lucky enough to be flying with the camera in the plane when a vulture came soaring over the flying field. The difficult thing about photography from an R/C plane is that you can't know for sure what is in the viewfinder, so there's a good measure of luck involved in getting the picture right. With the vulture speeding up in level flight, Zimmerman judged the wingspans to be about the same for both the plane and bird, so when they looked equal, he pushed the switch and captured this photo.

What could possibly be better than Aerial Still photos from your R/C plane? How about Digital Video clips? Since there is action involved in this hobby, it just makes sense that video would be more exciting. Many of the thumbnail images on the next page represent the very best of aerial videos Zimmerman & Byrd have taken from their respective R/C airplanes
