2007 JCRC: Meeting Dates & Minutes

2007 JCRC: New Year's Day Fly-in!

We scheduled our fly-no-matter-what-the-weather flying event on Monday, January 1, and for the third year in a row, we lucked out. The weather wasn't "perfect"--temperatures in the 40's and 10-15 mph crosswinds, but it was sunny and felt fairly warm for January. Many successful flights were logged and unlike last year, everything went home in one piece!. Click here to view the photos.

2007 JCRC Special Announcement: Bill Stodgell, 1931 - 2007

We are saddened to report that former JCRC Club Officer, Bill Stodgell, died on Friday, January 19th, due to heart disease. He is survived by his wife, Malvina Stodgell. A special visitation was held on Tuesday, January 23rd, at the Freeman Mortuary in Jefferson City that included several photos of Bill and his R/C airplanes. They even had a couple of his airplanes on display. The funeral was a private ceremony. Memorials were suggested to JCRC, the American Heart Association or the Jefferson City Animal Shelter. Bill served as JCRC Treasurer for several (13+) years and was one of the founding members of JCRC back in 1983 and was flying regularly from the age of 12 until he passed at the age of 75. His wife said that Bill was able to get in one flying session in 2007 before the rapid heart failure claimed his life. His service and devotion to JCRC will be missed. Click here to view Bill's obituary as featured in the Jefferson City News Tribune.

2007 KCRC: Swap-N-Shop

Several JCRC Members attended the annual KCRC Swap-N-Shop held on January 20th in Kansas City. Click here to view some photos of the event.

2007 Austin: Texas-style R/C Fly-In

The Austin, Texas, R/C Fly-In was attended by JCRC Club President, Stacy Gillmore and his wife, Lori. They were in that area of the country this weekend of May 2007 and stopped by to watch the action and to take some photos of the event. Click here to view the photos from the event.

2007 Kennett: Helicopter Fly-In

The Kennett Helicopter event was attended by JCRC Members, Dr. Jim Crago and Rick Poire. Among others, Jim took his new Hirobo Freya 90-sized Helicopter and Rick took his Century Hawk. There were Heli experts on hand to offer setup help as well as vendors selling lots of neat items. This is a very popular event among R/C Helicopter enthusiasts. Click here to view the photos from the event.

2007 MMRCA: Spring Fling

JCRC Members attended the first area Fly-in to start off the 2007 season in Columbia, Missouri, at the MMRCA Spring Fling. The winds were blowing but didn't seem to bother most pilots. There were a variety of model airplanes on hand and these guys always put on a good time. The food was fabulous. It is great to see how the women of MMRCA kick in and really make the event well worth attending, you don't see that in many Clubs around here. All of the folks at MMRCA made this a very friendly event to attend. Click here to view the photos from the event.

2007 JCRC Special Announcement: Annie Johnson, 1958 - 2007

Once again this year we are faced with sending out our condolences to another JCRC Member, Kenny Johnson, as we mourn the passing of his wife, Annie. She passed away in her Holts Summit home on Friday, May 11th. She had a long, hard and valiant fight against the cancer that eventually claimed her life. Annie was another, great, behind-the-scenes "R/C Widow" as she supported Kenny in his hobby and she enjoyed watching Kenny fly because flying brought him so much joy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kenny and his family. Click here to view Annie's obituary as featured in the Jefferson City News Tribune.

2007 JCRC: 9th Annual JCRC Charity Float Fly

The 2007 9th Annual JCRC Charity Float Fly turned out to be possibly our most successful to date. It  was held on Saturday, May 12th. Twenty Three registered pilots took part in the event that was featured in the Sunday News Tribune in their May 13th edition. We had absolutely perfect weather for the event in a week where the weather was very questionable. Several people worked over a period of two days to make it all happen and we want each of them to know how grateful we are for making this event a success. We want to thank our photographers; Chris Byrd, Amber Byrd & Shaun Zimmerman for all of their hard work in capturing the photos. Be sure to show your support to the sponsors of our event, including John Arndt of Mid-Mo Hobby Shop who donated an Edge 540 ARF airplane! Horizon Hobby donated an E-Flite Cub. Great Planes sent us an O.S. 46-LA engine and Rick Poire donated a Chips Akro II kit. Our Raffle winners included Tom Copeland who won the Edge, Gordon DeBroeck won the Cub, Kenny Johnson won the O.S. engine and Roy Seals won the kit. Photos are starting to arrive, keep in mind that there will be several pages of photos, so don't miss out by only looking at the first page, in the meantime, click here to view the first of seven pages of photos of the event.

2007 JCRC: Sig Fly-In

We had our biggest gathering of JCRC Members to date at this year's Sig Fly-in that was held on June 8, 9, & 10, in Montezuma, Iowa. Nearly 600 pictures were taken over the period of three days during 2007 Sig Fly-In and they have been narrowed down to just over 250. Yes, it's a lot, but it was a 3-day, memorable event. One of the highlights was when Hazel "Sig" Sigafoose stood next to Steve Bradford's beautiful 1/3rd scale Sig Spacewalker which was flown for the first time at the Sig Flying Field that she owns! 2007 MMRCA: Summer Sizzler

If you're a superstitious type, then this event was destined to be a success because it was held on 07/07/07! Click here to view the photos of the 2007 MMRCA Summer Sizzler. There just may be something lucky about those numbers as once again, several JCRC Members made their way to this fun, but very hot event. They sure have it named appropriately! Even though the heat made it somewhat miserable, being surrounded by great friends and food made it very tolerable (not to mention a couple of generator-powered fans!) Several nice airplanes were on hand, including the maiden flight of Steve Bradford's AeroWorks Stearman with an authentic 5-cylinder radial engine. Plus a group of students from the University of Missouri put on a demonstration flight with a highly modified Sig Kadet Senior. Tom Gillmore flew his Raptor helicopter for the first time at this event. Rick Poire also flew his very nice Dragon Lady for the first time here.

2007 MMRCA: Another Memorable Flying Day

Since we had such a great time the week prior at the Summer Sizzler event, several JCRC members decided to return to the MMRCA field the very next week on Saturday, July 15th. Once again we had the opportunity watch Steve Bradford's AeroWorks Stearman fly. Stacy Gillmore brought out his Ohio R/C PT-19 and flew it for the first time. It was another beautiful Saturday and it wasn't quite as hot (but almost) as the previous week. Paul Pennington keeps bringing out previously unseen airplanes like his Ultimate biplane. There was a beautiful giant scale helicopter on hand as well. Plus all our great friends from MMRCA were there and we enjoyed watching Helen Enger start taking her first R/C flying lessons. Afterwards many of us enjoyed a nice meal at a nearby Chinese buffet. Click here to view photos from this memorable flying day.

2007 JCRC: 21st Annual MDA Benefit Fly-In

Quite possibly the best event of the year for many JCRC Members who used a portion of their Labor Day Holiday weekend to travel to the extreme northeast corner of Missouri to the town of Taylor to attend the R/C Air Command event. In some cases entire families came out to attend. Stacy Gillmore & Shaun Zimmerman documented a lot of the fun with over 250 pictures that we hope you'll enjoy. Click here to view them. The event ran from Friday, August 31 through Saturday & Sunday, September 1 & 2, 2007. Some members attended one day, others stayed the entire time. No matter what, we believe everyone had a great time. There is certainly a huge variety of airplanes, both in style and in size, at this event. Some have called the event 'unfriendly' towards 3-D flyers, we believe the pictures speak volumes in showing that this is not the case. In addition to the 3-D flying, the giant scale, the turbine jets and the friendships made the event worth attending. Click here and enjoy the photos!

2007 KCRC: Warbird Fly-In

The KCRC Warbird Fly-In was held on September 15, 2007, in Lees Summit, Missouri, at the KCRC / 49th Jumbo Squadron's Flying site located near Lake Jacomo inside Fleming Park. They have a 500 ft. by 40 ft. paved runway on a nice facility. The event started out small but continued through the day to a strong finish after everyone thawed out from the early morning, 39 degree, cold temperature. It was a very enjoyable event, the following JCRC Members attended; Stacy Gillmore, Shaun Zimmerman, Steve Bradford, John Dussold, Kent Imhoff, Kenny Johnson, Paul Pennington and Dick Barnett. There were several R/C events being held on the same weekend in the Kansas City area, so attendance was down from last year, but we all had fun. Steve Bradford & John Dussold both brought back awards; Steve had the largest warbird, his Dynaflight PT-19 and John had the smallest warbird, his P-38. Click here to view the two pages of photos of all the fun.

2007 JCRC: Helicopter Fly-In

We are very grateful to all of the pilots, spectators, volunteers and the Missouri Army National Guard for helping to make our first ever JCRC Helicopter Fly-In a big success. The event was held on Saturday, September 22nd. We had 20 registered pilots and five very professional Army National Guard Soldiers who kept things exciting in the air. We enjoyed the company of Army Aviators Capt Shawn McCroskey, CW3 Vaughn Brown, CW2 Aaron Stoltz, Sgt Ron Whetsten, and Ssg Michael Moore who flew in from Springfield in a Bell UH-1 "Iroquois" Helicopter, also known as the "Huey", that is one of only two examples of this iconic bird still flying in the Missouri National Guard. This one was built back in 1974 and certainly has more personality and patina than most other Guard Helicopters that you might see. We are so grateful that the arrangements could be made for them to visit out Flying Field, we greatly enjoyed their company and they left good impressions with everyone they spoke with. We also had several top-notch, in some cases - sponsored - pilots that wowed everyone with their incredible skills, including the photo here of Paul Soha's Avant Carbon Extreme as he flies perilously close to the ground; inverted! Click here to view the best of several hundred pictures we took for your viewing pleasure. The photos were taken by Chris Byrd, Stacy Gillmore & Shaun Zimmerman. Thanks to all of the hard-working JCRC Members and some of their wives who made this event possible. Thanks also to Maj. Aaron Stover for our event logo and his hand in bringing in his comrades with their full-scale helicopter! Thanks to Chris Byrd for being the Contest Director of the 2007 event.

2007 MMRCA: Chili Fly-In

The pictures of the annual MMRCA Chili Dog Fly-In are finally ready for viewing! Click here to see the two pages of photos of the event that closes out the flying season with a bang (hey, there's chili involved). It was held on Saturday, October 6th, 2007. We love flying at this Columbia, Missouri, flying site and even more importantly we love hanging out with our great friends that make up the Mid-Missouri Radio Control Association and all the other pilots who show up for this event. Andy Steere of MMRCA has also posted several pictures and video clips on the MMRCA website, so be sure to check them out too, by clicking here. In addition to the Chili there was lots of other great food items to pick from, but it was a little hotter-than-normal for this time of the year. There were many highlights at this event, including Steve Bradford's 1/3rd-scale Nieuport 28-C with a Moki 150cc gas-powered 5-cylinder radial engine. Troy Hamm showed up with a new aerobatic airplane as well as a hobby shop! There was some impromptu formation flying of two nearly identical Tiger 60's. There were even a couple of out-of-character mishaps at this event. Several JCRC Members attended and stayed all day to enjoy the fun.

2007 JCRC: Model Aviation Museum

Former JCRC Member Richard "Dick" Barnett has an R/C Airplane that he built donated to the National Model Aviation Museum in Muncie, Indiana. The museum houses the world's largest collection of Model Airplanes. According to the Museum website; Richard "Dick" Barnett recently restored one of the first “Flat Top Stormer” models manufactured by his company, R & L Model Specialties, in 1961 and donated it to the Museum. Doug Spreng designed the model and used the craft he built to win the 1960 and 1961 National Pattern contests with it. After such success he asked R & L to kit the design. R & L put out the kit with a fiberglass fuselage and pre-cut parts. The donated model has an original fuselage and fully restored wings. The engine, a K&B .61, was donated to the project by Clarence Lee. In the photo is pictured Michael Smith, Museum Curator, and Maria Van Vreede, Museum Registrar.

2007 JCRC: Christmas Party

Here are the pictures from 2007 JCRC Christmas Party. Don't worry, there's nothing too embarrassing! Click here to view them. It was another wonderful gathering of friends in the beautiful home of Dr. Jim & Melba Crago. Their hospitality is nothing short of amazing and the food was fantastic! Thanks to all who participated, I believe everyone had a great time. A "White Elephant" gift exchange added to activities at this year's event. It takes too long to explain, but in the end, everyone who participated left with...something. Our gratitude goes out to the Crago's for allowing us into their home again this year. Wishing a happy (& good flying) New Year to all!
