JCRC was contacted by the Great Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts to see if we would be interested in participating in their upcoming encampment. This is one of the biggest Boy Scouting events held in Missouri. We have done demonstration flights for smaller groups of scouts in the past and had a wonderful time doing it, so of course we wanted to be a part of this larger event. A few weeks before the actual event we went to the Ike Skelton Training Site to check out the facilities and to make certain that we would be able to safely give demonstrations and to determine what sizes of airplanes we'd be able to fly. That was fun in itself because in many ways their facility had more open area than our own flying field. The only downside to the entire event was the fact that it was held on the same day as the MMRCA's Fall Chili-dog Fly-In which we so much enjoy attending. The sacrifice was worth it as we were able to fly in front of hundreds of appreciative scouts who were impressed with event the simplest of aerobatics. We nearly lost our voices by the end of the day because we had answered so many questions, but that's what we love to do; talk about our R/C hobby and airplanes. We knew that nearly all of them would like to have tried flying an airplane and we wanted each to have that opportunity, but logistically that was impossible with so many scouts, so we asked aviation-related questions to determine who would get a chance to try it. Even some of the more interested leaders got to try it as well. Dr. Jim Crago and Shaun Zimmerman both brought out their Sig Kadet trainer airplanes with trainer cords to allow this to happen. As expected, the kids (with game console experience) did great! The weather was great and we had a wonderful time. We have two (2) pages of photos for you to enjoy. featured below.
