36 pilots attended this event with some 50+ airplanes on hand. It was a very friendly event, but certainly one of the weirdest Fly-In events that we have ever attended. There was more crashing going on at this event than at a NASCAR race! Some of the notable crashes were the one where a pilot lost control due to the wind on take-off and ended up hitting his flying buddy who was flying his beautiful Fokker Tri-Plane and both airplanes were lost. Luckily the pilot who was hit was not injured. Another P-51 done up in the Miss America scheme lost battery power and from 150 yards away from the flightline hit a telephone pole so straight-on that the engine was actually embedded in the pole while the rest of the airframe disintegrated around the pole and down to the ground. I believe we counted 10+ crashes which made us a little edgy as well, but everything went great for us and we had a great time. Good company, good people, good food, nearly perfect day - amen! One of the nicer guys that we met at this Fly-In was
Don Thun of Topeka, Kansas. He took some fantastic photos of the
event; a few of them are even featured below since he took some nice shots
of our airplanes as well. We are very grateful for his generosity in sharing
these quality photos as they can be hard to come by, especially for
free! To see
some of the other fantastic photos he captured, including some of the
many crashes, click
here. Thanks Don!! Otherwise
the photos below were taken by Shaun Zimmerman, Stacy Gillmore or Steve
Bradford, who, oddly enough, were the ones who attended the event from
JCRC! |
