Here are some of the photos taken on
Friday, July 22nd, a day that many took off from work to
help setup for Saturday.
Mike
Anderson and John Dussold get their airplanes ready for
flight. |
Mike Anderson and John Dussold take
advantage of full-access to Binder Lake the day prior to the
Float Fly to try out their planes.
Mike Anderson mounted his Spacewalker on
floats and it was beautiful in the air, looking reminiscent
of a Schneider Cup race plane while Randy Morris drove his
ShockWave R/C Airboat around Binder Lake at the same time.
After the flight of his Stick on floats,
John Dussold can no longer say that "he's never flown
off water" any more!
John's first flight off of water went
great and even had a spectacular launch as the plane went
airborne.
Again more of John Dussold's Stick on
floats as it flies by and just as the water rudder kisses
the water.
Mike Anderson also had a Shockwave R/C
boat, but his is the type that has an inboard glow-powered
engine and this boat can move! That is right up until it
runs out of fuel and had to be recovered. More misfortune
waited for Mike and his great looking Spacewalker.
Unfortunately, as can be seen in the photo below, the left
rear brace that holds the float came loose causing the plane
to spiral out of control as the float because an unwanted
control surface.
Mike did his best to keep it under
control, but the loose float was more than the plane could
handle. The middle photo shows the plane an instant after
the impact with the water. Fortunately for Mike he hit the
water instead of the ground and the plane only suffered
moderate damage and should be flying again soon.
Mike Anderson then got out his beautiful
sailboat, unfortunately, as soon as it was launched, he
realized that there was a problem with the steering servo,
so he decided to wade out to get it since it was still close
to shore, well, it drops off a little more than expected,
but he got it back..
Mike Anderson then repaired the minor problem with the
steering servo and set off chasing the wind. Then let the Float
Fly begin - the panoramic photo shows the site just prior to
getting started on Saturday. Rick Poire is getting his float
plane ready for flight.
Rick's airplane on the take-off run, but
it just wouldn't come out of the water. Rick spent more time
helping us get ready for the event and didn't have enough
time to get his plane set up exactly as he would have liked.
Tom Gillmore is shown with a 'recovery boat' that he and
Stacy created in case a plane gets stranded and a larger
boat isn't available.
The Gillmore's recovery boat attempts to
push Rick Poire's floatplane back to shore after the engine
quit. Also pictured is Jim Crago's beautiful Tugboat. Jim
has been building on this Tugboat, on and off, for over 20
years and finished it in time for our event. It is capable
of turning just like a full-size Tugboat with two electric
motors and four water rudders!
Finally, using the recovery boat provided
by Rick Poire - Chris Bogg was able to go out and recover
Rick's stranded airplane. Stacy & Tom Gillmore run their
R/C Airboat across the water. The spectators really enjoyed
watching to boats too. Another shot of the event area.
Stacy Gillmore graciously accepts John
Ardnt's (owner of Mid-Mo
Hobby Shop) generous gift of three $25 Gift Certificates
to be used at his Hobby Shop. Thanks John! Also pictured is
a small contingency of ducks who decided to hang out with us
most of the day as Jim Crago's Neptune floats it's way into
take off position while angler's in a boat look on. I
believe they were some of the only people out there besides
us all day. They seemed to enjoy watching too.
Jim Crago's Neptune and Tom Copeland's
airplanes along the flight line area with more spectators
watching on.
Tom Copeland was one of the first in the
air with his "B-ARF" that really looks nice on
floats - taking off, flying and touching down on the water.
