We held our annual Float Fly on a beautiful Saturday in August. Jim Sander (and his daughter), Chris Byrd, Stan Zimmerman, Tom Copeland and Shaun Zimmerman all helped getting the event setup with the club tent, frequency pins, etc. Ron Horn made the event possible by bringing out his boat which was used on several occasions throughout the day to recover stranded planes in the middle of Binder Lake and we owe a large amount of gratitude to him for going to all that trouble. Stan Zimmerman, father of Club President, Shaun Zimmerman, drove all the way from Muncie, Indiana, to help organize and setup the event. (Thanks, Dad!)

Many spectators stopped by to watch the fun including; Leo &  Susan Knisely of Columbia; John & Shirley Carron and their whole family; including Dr. David Carron, Paul & Sonny Carron, Jamie & Deborah Cote; and too many grandkids to mention! Michael Little, and two of Charlie Little's grandson's (Jeffrey) also stopped by. Mike was driving a really neat looking tricked out '29 Ford Coupe. Other club members and friends stopped by including; Ben Shellman and his very lovely sister. Jerry Hoose (the Chimney Sweep Guy) & his son, Anthony, who recently soloed his R/C plane. Club Secretary Mark Brothers stopped by with several grandchildren. We also the pleasant company of new club members Bill & Karen Haarman and Vernon Davis. Bill is also solo flying his trainer very well now, but he didn't bring it out to try it on the floats (yet). Daniel Smith of Eldon showed up to represent the LORCS Club. While he didn't bring a float plane, he did bring an Eagle with a camera mounted inside as well as a GWS Slow Stick with an array of lights that will blow your mind. Check out those pages on our web for updates.

We had about 10 pilots with various planes from Copeland's very pretty ones, to Sander's big ones to some planes that were, well, really ugly ones! Most flew well, but flying off the water is always a challenge but it can be very rewarding too. Thanks to everyone who helped, watched, participated and came by! Now for more photos and captions.

This is a group of people gathered around Shaun Zimmerman as he was instructing them on how to fly his GWS Slow Stick, but the high winds kept them from having a successful training session.

Please note that the photographs on this page were taken by Leo Knisely, Mike Little, Stan Zimmerman & Shaun Zimmerman, we appreciate their contributions in making this possible. Now for some photos of the event, just click on the thumbnail to view a larger version of the photo.

Marty Bertels drove all the way from Martinsburg (Mo) with his Ace Seamaster. These flying boat type planes really worked great!

Ron Horn with his (recovery) boat, which he even had to use to recover his own plane after a splash down

Chris Byrd really wow'ed the crowd with his attention-getting 60-sized Raptor helicopter on inflatable pontoons. He even set it down in the middle of a patch of Lilly (Heli) Pads

Here are some earlier photos of Chris getting his Goldberg Eagle ready for the event, unfortunately he had some engine problems and didn't get to fly it.

Chris Byrd and his daughter, Amber, really loved to go out in the boat to help retreive the planes and at least she knew better than to grab them by the (hot) engine!

Jim Sander got everyone's attention with is huge Quadra-powered Lanier Stinger. Jim also brought out a really neat Balsa USA Northstar flying boat that looks more like a jet-boat. He was kind enough to let others have some stick time as well.

Thanks again to everyone who participated.

Tom Copeland brought out three very nice looking airplanes, including a beautiful scale Cub, an Ace Seamaster and probably the cutest plane of all, a Gee Bee with custom floats

Here Tom is "fishing" his stranded plane out of the lake with a fishing pole that has a large rubber ball attached to the line so that it can be cast out past the plane, then reeled in.

Shaun Zimmerman brought out three float planes. A Great Planes PT-20, a Sig LT-40 Kadet and a Balsa USA Stick 40+ which he flew the most, but only made it back to shore once without having to send out the recovery boat!
