Here are two pages of thumbnail photos of the Kansas City Indoor Fun-fly event held on September 20, 2003, in an empty hanger located on the old Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base. Click here or on the Windows Media Logo at right to view the Video Index from the KC Indoor Event. The facility was slightly larger than the Washington Park Ice Arena where we held our event, but the biggest advantage was a much higher ceiling, however the ice arena had the distinct advantage of the safety glass and nets to keep errant planes out of the pit and spectator areas. JCRC President (2003), Shaun Zimmerman and LORCS's Daniel Smith attended the event from Central Missouri. Also on hand was Bill Birmingham of Park Flyer Motors who also attended our event. It was great to see both of them there.
The event was organized by Leonard Gaither (lensrc@casstel.net) with a lot of help from his wife, Laura, as well as his brother, Alvin. There appeared to be 30+ pilots at this event with a huge variety of wonderful airplanes to look at - everything from itty bitty micro airplanes, all the way up to a flying wing with a 65"+ wingspan. Leonard is also the designer of the "Sweetest Yet" biplane which was the 'grand prize' for the raffle, it came complete with all the flight gear - talk about a wonderful prize to win! Bill Birmingham of Park Flyer Motors donated prizes, as did Shawn Palmer of Castle Creations (designers of the Pixie / Phoenix speed controllers), KsFlyer of AV8 Hobbies and Charles Shroeder of Northland Hobbies. Bob Anderson donated a "Gymallo" kit which would have been great to win. There was a great selection of door prizes, unfortunately, as usual, Zimmerman didn't win anything, but Guy Smith (Daniel's son) did win a Pixie 7 Speed Controller (Guy, make sure your Dad pays you the $34.99 that they sell for if he takes it! HA! Better yet, ask him to build you a plane for you to use it in! :-)
Ken Spencer & Bob Selman of the GymDandy flyers of Joplin, Missouri, showed up with some very unique models as well as tiny micro flyers, check out their website too.
This building seemed to have some of the same radio glitching problems that we experienced here in Jefferson City and again it seemed to be in the same corner of the building every time. There were a few mishaps, gratefully no injuries.
From the very first guy in the door to the last, there were neat planes to look at. Some that stood out were the "Wespe" built by Ken Spencer. There was a Dual Autogiro, a super micro "Ugly" Stick that was amazing to watch fly and anything but ugly. There was even an electric helicopter at this event which really flew well. I believe everyone had a good time. One of E-Zone's regulars, "Spfd-e-flyer", Larry, out of Springfield, MO, brought a huge assortment of really nice indoor electric planes. They fly in an indoor soccer arena down there! Bob Anderson brought his "Gymallo" kit and even donated one as a prize. It is a parasail type airplane that had wonderful performance and personality. Check out his website as well by clicking here.
